Arrowhead’s newest Democratic Conversation video stars the studio’s CCO and Helldivers 2 creative director, Johan Pilestedt. Answering questions from the community, Pilestedt reveals some sequel-defining features that Arrowhead wants to introduce into Helldivers 2 to essentially evolve it into Helldivers 3.
Speaking during the latest Democratic Conversation, a series of videos where Arrowhead developers answer questions from the community, Pilestedt says “there’s quite a lot” of sequel-defining features he would like to see, including “eight player missions”. Helldivers 2 only allows up to four players to join a mission, but Pilestedt teased in 2024 that increasing the team size is “not impossible,” and is something Arrowhead “talks about often”.
Pilestedt also wants “larger open world maps where maybe you could come across another Helldivers team to then take on bigger challenges together”. The final feature Pilestedt mentions is “operations that affect other teams”.
Without going into specifics, Pilestedt ends the topic by describing sequel-defining features as “anything that accentuates the Galactic War and the scale of the conflict that the players are in”.
Pilestedt first revealed at the end of 2024 that Arrowhead is “growing Helldivers 2 into Helldivers 3” instead of making an entirely new game. With this evolution in mind, Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani says the developer could support Helldivers 2 for “10 years” or longer, provided “people [still] play [and] pay”.
While Arrowhead is not making Helldivers 3 from scratch, the studio is developing a new game that is “100% funded by themselves”. All we know about this game is that it’s using Unreal Engine 5 instead of the Autodesk Stingray/Bitsquid engine used for Helldivers 2, resulting in a lot of “technical debt”.
Arrowhead also suggests that Helldivers 2 fans “will recognize the DNA” of the new game, and that it’s not “too far off from Helldivers”.
