Though I’m not entirely convinced we need yet another hero shooter to join the likes of Overwatch and Marvel Rivals, something is captivating about developer Wildlight’s recently announced Highguard. From its unique pairing of a medieval aesthetic with modern high-powered weapons to the fact that it’s led by the creators behind Apex Legends and Titanfall, this PvP raid shooter may be just what’s needed to revitalize the genre.
With Wildlight debut now out in the wild, here’s everything you need to know about the PvP raid shooter, Highguard.
- Highguard released on January 26, 2026.
- It is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
- Highguard is a first-person PvP raid shooter from the creators of Apex Legends and Titanfall.
Highguard release date

Highguard was released on January 26, 2026. The PvP shooter launched as a free-to-play title, open to all, with no lengthy feedback-gathering and bug-fixing early access period. Highuard drew in over 97,000 players when it launched, although this decreased rather rapidly as the day wore on.
A flood of negative Steam reviews followed . Criticism touched on the map being too large for the game’s 3v3 format, the match loop activities, weapon balance complaints, and performance issues even on high-end setups.
Highguard gameplay

Highguard is described as an FPS PvP raid shooter. You play as Wardens, arcane gunslingers tasked with fighting for control of a mythical continent. Each match is played within a large arena. Each crew of wardens will face off against one another to gain control of an objective called the Shieldbreaker. This initial phase resembles the likes of Overwatch and other hero shooters.
Once the Shieldbrekaer is secured, you’re then tasked with attacking and breaking into the enemy’s team base to destroy it and secure territory. While Wildlight’s claims of an “all-new breed of shooter” may be a little fanciful, Highguard’s structure is certainly original, or at least melds elements of other shooters in novel ways. The fact that the studio is made up of veterans behind Apex Legends and Titanfall bodes well, though, so there’s plenty to be optimistic about.
Combat combines modern weapons with fantasy-inspired magic, mounts, and massive medieval siege weapons. There appear to be characters or heroes, each with a unique set of powers and skills, suggesting gameplay synergies that will require some thought when piecing together team compositions.
Highguard trailers
Wildlight has released two trailer so far. The First aired during The Game Awards 2025 as the show’s big final reveal, serving as both an announcement trailer and a release date reveal bundled into one. It’s an action-packed two minutes and 36 seconds, showcasing Wardens riding on horseback before engaging in high-paced gunfights, using weapons and magic to secure objectives, defend positions, and traverse fantasy-inspired environments.
The studio followed up with a launch trailer on January 26, 2026, offering the first meaty look at the moment-to-moment gameplay that makes up Highguard’s loop.
Highguard platforms

Highguard launched on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on January 26, 2026. That’s the three main platforms covered, and developer Wildlight Entertainment has stated that the game features cross-play, allowing players on all three platforms to play together seamlessly.
Wildlight hasn’t mentioned Nintendo Switch 2 yet, but we imagine plans are in place to port it over to Nintendo’s new console if Highguard’s initial release goes down well and draws in a sustained player base. That’s speculation at this point, so take it with a pinch of salt.
