Thief renders at native 1080p on PlayStation 4 and 900p on Xbox One, Eidos Montreal has confirmed. Both versions run at 30 frames per second.

Game director Nicolas Cantin revealed the final resolutions to Eurogamer, but claimed that players will "really need good eyes to see the difference". He's also alleged to have insisted that the Xbox One version "is as good as the PS4 version".

The difference is identical to that of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, which also renders at 900p on Xbox One and – following a post-release patch – 1080p on PS4.

Performance differences between multiplatform titles are becoming a regular occurrence for Microsoft, who has already seen numerous titles perform worse on its console.

Earlier this week it was confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes runs at 720p on Xbox One and 1080p on PlayStation 4. Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Assassin's Creed 4 and Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition all perform worse on Xbox One, too.

There have also been whispers this week that Watch Dogs may render at a lower resolution on Xbox One than PS4.

Microsoft, though, seems to think that the debate over "minor" visual differences has gotten "way overblown".

Thief launches on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC next Friday, February 28.

The 360 had the worst reliability issues we have ever seen in console history. This could of quite easily killed off the Xbox format.

I am anything but Naive.

Sad but true but Indie games do not sell consoles. You can have all the non AAA releases you want. Without the big advertisements it means squat.

As for full release exclusives the one currently has more. As for the future they are on a par.

Out of my close circle of gaming friends who I would all class as core gamers 7/10 went with the one the other 3 are looking to pick one up in the future. (I wish I also did this). I also wish I waited before committing to a brand for my first console of this generation. But as for word of mouth my mum wants a one for Xbox Fitness. She is currently coming to my house every day when I'm in work to do her session of insanity. Currently doesn't have the room but has bought my home so is getting a console when moving in.(Tempted to sell her mine lol). She walks in says Xbox On (TV + Xbox Comes on), Xbox says Hello Christine, She says "Xbox go to Xbox Fitness" up loads the app. She then tells it which workout she wants and away she goes (The App is amazing). When finished says Xbox Turn off and the whole system shuts down. I tell her that if I were to film that and put it out as an advert it would sell a million consoles to UK ladies alone.

The PS4 has sold approximately 1.6m more consoles than the one. But it has been launched in more regions. A number that could be severely shortened when the consoles launch in those zones. This isn't a guarantee and I don't see them catching up just yet but the difference isn't anything it could be turned around in a good fortnight of sales.

But I don't actually see MS bridging the gap for the life-cycle of these consoles. They will always be around 10-20% behind but in the grand scheme of things those numbers really don't matter. It's install base will always mean that it gets games and MS will continue to launch new games and mechanics. 80mil vs 100mil doesn't really matter. The install base is so vast.

Hardware and OS issues can hamper developers when they are more complicated or constrictive than they should be. The Xbox One, on paper, is very similar to the PS4 in terms of hardware, with a few slight differences that fall in favour of Sony's machine, but from what developers have said, it's more to do with memory allocations and restrictions that MS could easily lift if they want (and some reports say that this is exactly what they plan to do.

As for whether this sort of story affects platform sales, we as gamers who daily look at these news stories are a minority among those who buy consoles and many would be purchasers are unaware or just don't care about the minor (and they are to them) difference. They will buy the console their friends have to play online.

Enough chats with potential platform owners in shops and listening to other conversations has assured me that 1080 and 900 are just meaningless numbers to a lot of people.

If the cheaper price and mainstream press have swayed people to PS4 then it certainly has an advantage due to the larger install base and the knock on effect of friends buying the same system. That was certainly the case last generation, but I don't see it happening to the same degree here.

Anything that can do 720p is good enough so 900p is just fine for me. But it makes you think why are their so many games coming out at a lower resolution on xbox but not on ps4? can the xbox not handle 1080p at 30 frames?

I will be honest and say i really don't care which console sells more, as long as neither company goes bust i am happy.

I don't see how you can say the outlook for MS in incredibly bleak, the fact is despite the xbox one being the most expensive console and only being available in 13 markets at launch it broke the 360's first day sales records, it may not be selling as well as the PS4 but that does not mean it is struggling for sales, both consoles are doing very well which is only a good thing in my opinion.

MS need to put out unique gaming experiences that are only available on there console, I hope this head start Sony have makes them realise that despite their vision of an all purpose box in the living room, Sony despite the hardware performance of the PS4 once they get in their stride will be about gaming and MS need to keep delivering those existing exclusives, create new ones as well as get behind third party developers to offer solutions on getting the most out of its hardware.

I also think despite the Kinect being a let down on the 360, they need to concentrate a little on this, they have told us on countless occasions how good it is, so need to start to develop games that will deliver the early promise of the original Kinect at least, instead of being just for voice commands. The Xbox One is going to get harder to shift as time goes on to the casual market if people are expected to pay an extra £80 over the PS4 for the option of voice commands, I am still to see what my new Kinect can do despite being able to see my fingers and be a little more responsive.

"What will determine the sales isn't the early hardcore adopters. It's the average game"

Thats true, but these are People who for the most Part are playing Multiplattform titel. And when all that "runs better on Playstation" stuff is so prominent in the News it can have a Impact.
And Playstation is already on a Headstart, which means there are more People who will recommend Playstations.

All that dosn't mean that all is set for the Future and things can change fast, but right now all is playing in the hands of Sony. And when the bad News that are coming every Day now for the Xbox don't stop that dosn't help.

However, it does remind me at the PS3. Didn't start all that well and had a hard Time getting the Numbers the 360 had, but it made sony and the Playstation Brand better.
Thats what I hope happens wit the Box, learing and getting better. One Console dominating the Market isn't good.

I don't think it matters. 360 was the lesser console and sold more, Wii was far lesser of a console and sold boat loads more. What will determine the sales isn't the early hardcore adopters. It's the average gamer.

These people will decide upon the strength of the games, the extra functionality (Cool Factor) and what their friends go with. Ultimately we are all sheep.

I can't even defend my Xbox One anymore, it seems like there is bad news almost everyday, I think I am getting to the stage where I am overjoyed that a game runs in 900p. Even as a owner of an X1 I think MS may have blown it, not at the level Nintendo have with the Wii U but certainly compared to the last gen battle. They need a decent price drop and some exclusives developed by their own studios to get the best out of the console to stand a chance as third party releases seem to be damaging their reputation even further.

The News really is that right now kinda all Games have a diffrence and that the cheaper Console is the one who is doing it better.

I wonder if that will keep on going like that or if it stopps when Devs learn to better use that esram Stuff on the Xbox. Because the longer that happens the more that Image will stuck in the Head of People and can cause Problems for MS.
