Microtransactions have been added to Forza Motorsport 6, despite earlier claims from Turn 10 stating that they would only be added to the game if players started "asking" for them.

As spotted by TeamVVV, 'Tokens' can now be used to purchase cars, upgrades and Mod Cards, with packs of Tokens ranging in price from 79p all the way to £64.99. One Token is said to be the equivalent of 500 in-game Credits, with a 100 Token pack available for 79p.

Here's the full list of denominations available:

  • 100 Tokens - 79p
  • 325 Tokens - £2.39
  • 575 Tokens - £3.99
  • 1,250 Tokens - £7.99
  • 2,700 Tokens - £15.99
  • 8,000 Tokens - £39.99
  • 20,000 Tokens - £64.99

The 100 Token pack is currently not listed within the in-game store, however, and only seems to be available directly through Xbox.com.

The introduction of microtransactions comes as a surprise, however, given comments from Forza Motorsport 6's content director earlier in the year.

"Between rewards for the Forza faithful, the new prize spinner, and increased payouts in the career, there's a lot of ways to earn [credits]," Wendl told Shacknews in the weeks prior to the game's launch. "We just basically wanted to remove that sort of friction. The only way microtransactions would come back is if sometime in the life cycle, players are asking for it, just as an option or something like that. We're hoping the in-game economy will support how people will play the game."

The game was also commended in our review for its move away from microtransactions.

"One thing that is absolutely clear is Turn 10's move away from microtransactions," said our 8/10 review. "After the backlash against their inclusion in Forza 5, they are nowhere to be seen in 6. Even the new Mod Cards, used to give you perks during races, can only be bought using in-game credits."

But what do you think? Are you disappointed to see microtransactions return to Forza, or are you happy to be given the option to purchase new cars ahead of time? Let us know in the comments.

Forza Motorsport 6 is available now on Xbox One.

Having them added after launch is even more vile than what they've done in the past. Yes, you can turn off tokens, but I would immediately feel cheated after paying full price for the game. If the game was truly balanced without them, and they're completely optional, then they have no reason to exist. That's clearly not the case, so I'm immediately inclined to believe the game was skewed towards slow progression without them. Also, I'd like to meet a single person who "asked" for them. "Yeah, I don't really feel like playing the game, so I'd love the option to pay more money and skip all that silly content."

I think Jim Sterling said it best - "Microtransactions in $60 games are NEVER excusable".
