Rockstar is "investigating" how and why copies of Grand Theft Auto 5 have arrived with some customers ahead of the game's official release, after requesting that online retailers do not dispatch copies until tomorrow, September 16.

Some Amazon.co.uk customers received their copies of GTA 5 yesterday – four days in advance of the game's official street date – with other retailers across Europe reported to have been selling the title on the high street.

One French retailer is alleged to have advertised the fact that it is selling the game early on Facebook, while other reports suggest that the game is readily available in stores across Spain.

In a statement issued to GamesIndustry International this morning, Rockstar said that it is "in the process of investigating early 'sales' to determine how and why that is occurring."

Rockstar is thought to have placed strict guidelines on the sale of Grand Theft Auto 5, having requested that UK online retailers do not dispatch copies until the day before release.

It isn't yet known how the publisher will react to early sales or whether it will penalise Amazon for dispatching copies to customers early.

GTA 5 launches officially this Tuesday, September 17, with a PSN preload due to go live at 3pm this afternoon. Our review will be live on VideoGamer.com at 3pm BST tomorrow.

GAME says there's still time to secure a copy of GTA 5 for delivery tomorrow.

It's so stupid. if they hadn't sold the early copies all these leaks wouldn't be out...

go to youtube and type in gta 5, the page is full of leaks, gameplay, loading screens. I personaly haven't watched any of them because I dont want the game spoiled for me before I get it.

so yeah thanks guys I hope you enjoy Grand Theft Auto V as much as I will.

oh and I get my copy tomorrow ;) GO AUSTRALIA!!!

What's the point in mass marketing a 17th September release date, which cost many tens of thousands at least, for some distributors to make that advertising null?
It's a bit mad to release that early. A day i'm alright with, but over half a week is just insulting to the distribution agreement and you can't really make an excuse about 'getting it on day of release'.

FFXIV:ARR is really good, i cant get excited about GTAV, mainly because it's on a console that I have no online access with.

Personally if I were Rockstar I would be pissed and would do everything in my power to penalise and vilify anyone that didn't respect the rules and guidelines I issued for MY intellectual property.

I have a very low opinion of leaks and early releases though. Absolutely no need. Games are released on certain days and have lots of services, marketing and advertisement aligned with them. Ordered online and delivery takes a few days? Touch *****. Them's the breaks. Want it day one? Walk in a shop and buy one.

That has to be Marketing. That People play it before Release dosn't hurt anybody, it even helps that ridiculous Hype.

If Rockstar is serious angry because of that, they are silly People. But then I always forgett that the Gaming Industrie is full of silly People.

As far as I know, Amazon still send their copies from the Channel Islands. So I guess they could argue that they're exempt.

Of course, Rockstar could have only sent companies the stock on Monday morning to make sure, but that would have meant some people not getting their copies. But then if they want to get draconian...

This is obviously and belt & braces masterclass in marketing by Rockstar. They obviously want maximum exposure at minimum expense. All the retailers tweet, facebook & email the news. The news is picked up by websites like videogamer & mainstream websites. Rockstar benefit from the free advertising to ensure everybody knows this is the the biggest game sale of this century.

HA - and an additional - HA, to Rockstar.

If they had been anymore controlling and draconian in the run up to GTA5's release, they would have to have changed their name to Apple.
