'Sometimes we want greasy hamburgers instead of caviar,' says Gearbox head.

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has found validation in the critically loathed Duke Nukem Forever's sales figures, and he likes what he sees.

"With sales data, It seems like *customers* love Duke. I guess sometimes we want greasy hamburgers instead of caviar..." said the Gearbox CEO on Twitter.

Earlier this week US industry analyst Arvind Bhatia stated that first day sales of Duke Nukem Forever in the US were "mediocre", but that the game was expected to sell between 1.5 and 2 million units.

In the UK, Duke Nukem Forever is currently No. 1 in the charts despite receiving a near-unanimous battering from critics.

The Joypads (who are also VideoGamer.com community legends) also asked Duke Nukem voice actor Jon St. John what he thought about the game's negative critical reception, and he subsequently accused critics of "missing the point".

"I have no comments regarding bad reviews by clueless critics," he said, in a voice that sounds like Duke Nukem's, adding that "they seem to want to compare Duke Nukem Forever to Call Of Duty and other FPS's and they are missing the point."

VideoGamer.com Analysis

The difference between greasy hamburgers and Duke Nukem Forever is that I like greasy hamburgers. In my dismissive 4/10 Duke Nukem Forever review, I say that "all things considered, The Human Centipede was less cruel than this."

Okay now I want to play Duke Nukem Forever just so I can see why it's bad... or if it's just an average shooter that has become divisive because of the high expectations.

Fair enough, there are a few ways DNF *could* have been made even more Duke-like, but as it stands I can't wait for any/all DLC scheduled. Never trading it in, but there certainly is a strong following for the title.

As said in other threads, this is perhaps the most divisive multi-platform game I have encountered in all my years of gaming!

Nice one Wido :D

I actually couldn't care less about DNF. I think it doesn't look good at all, but who am I to say others are wrong for enjoying it?

Thanks!

@Neon - Bugger me, best tell Ghost5 what has happened. I hope the kid doesn't get a heart attack of excitement. Zelda OOT for the 3DS being released today, and now this!

So happens to be Wes as well to post the news on Eurogamer! Haha, so need to give that man a rematch over the spamming of spinning piledriver's he gave me whilst I was Cody on the SSFIV game night.

I'm sorry... I like Randy Pitchford a lot, and I've got a lot of time for him, but Duke Nukem Forever isn't a hamburger.

It's a turd in a stale bun.

<3 You guys. :) (Can never exceed the expectations of how awesome VG is) There is certainly a divide for Duke Nukem Forever, the reviews show it, and the gamers show it. For me personally, I am happy what DNF has achieved regardless of the beatings it has endured.

Long live the Duke! :D
