Thief could be killed off if next year's reboot isn't a success, Eidos Montreal has warned.
Speaking to VideoGamer.com yesterday, Thief's producer Stephane Roy said that he "really want[s Thief] to be part of your future and not just part of your past...
"If people don't like this game, I doubt we're going to have more. I don't want to have another ten years between this game and another one. I want to make sure we're going to [be able to continue] to work on this franchise, so we must succeed on this one."
Thief has been in the shadows since 2004, when the third game, Thief: Deadly Shadows launched on PC and Xbox.
But the decision to bring back the series "is not just a short-term decision," Roy adds.
"That's why we decided to make sure we're going to have all the tools on our side to give you the best gaming experience possible."
Thief launches on PC, PlayStation 4 and "other next-generation platforms" in 2014.
