Square Enix is targeting a 1080p/30fps resolution and frame rate for the upcoming PS4 version of Rise of the Tomb Raider, the publisher has confirmed, adding that “anything beyond that is a bonus”.

In a statement provided to VideoGamer.com last night, Square Enix explained that it is “still optimizing the game, and our target is 1080p at a minimum of 30fps. Anything beyond that is a bonus.”

It’s a curious statement, and one that possibly suggests the game could achieve a faster frame rate than the 30fps it’s targeting. Whether it’ll manage that on a standard PS4, however, or if it’s something that will be limited to the more powerful PlayStation 4 Neo, isn’t clear.

The statement is similar to the one made by Square in the run up to 2014’s Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, where it said that its goal was to deliver “the core Tomb Raider gameplay at native 1080p and running at 30fps”. “Anything beyond 30fps for this version is gravy,” it added.

In that instance, the PS4 version actually ran at 60fps, twice as fast as the 30fps achieved by the Xbox One version. It was also developed by Nixxes, the Dutch studio who has teamed up with Crystal Dynamics once again for the PS4 version of Rise of the Tomb Raider.

“Crystal Dynamics is working with long-time partner Nixxes Software on the development of Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration,” Square added in its statement last night.

Rise of the Tomb Raider ran at 1080p/30fps when it debuted on Xbox One last November, although its cutscenes took a hit in resolution, dipping from 1920×1080 to 1440×1080.

The PS4 version is due to launch on October 11, right around the time PlayStation Neo may also be due to release.
