The release of World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria has triggered a resurgence in subscriber numbers to Activision Blizzard's MMO, selling 2.7 million copies in its first week to help boost the overall number of subscribers to beyond 10 million.

The fourth expansion pack, which introduces the Monk character class and raises the level cap to 90, went on sale in the UK last Tuesday, September 25.

"With Mists of Pandaria, we set out to expand on the sense of fun and discovery that's always been at the heart of World of Warcraft - in addition to adding a huge variety of new content and features to the game," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment.

"It's been gratifying to see the results of all of the work we put into this expansion and to hear all of the positive feedback from players so far."

Back in August, it was revealed that World of Warcraft's subscription levels had fallen to 9.1 million. Clearly, quite a few of you were waiting on the introduction of pandas. Back in October 2010 WoW reached a record high of 12 million subscribers.

According to Activision Blizzard, the World of Warcraft development team is already developing the first major post-launch content update for Mists of Pandaria, details of which will be released "in the weeks ahead".
