Pre-orders of the new Xbox One S have gotten off to an “amazing start”, according to Xbox marketing exec Mike Nichols.

The new slimline console was revealed during Microsoft’s E3 press conference two weeks ago, and while pre-order numbers have not been revealed, the platform holder says that both fans and retailers are “just as enthusiastic” about the upcoming hardware.

“With all the new innovation we’ve seen and experienced with Microsoft’s new Xbox One S console, we anticipate this creating excitement among our customers,” GameStop’s SVP of Merchandising Bob Puzon said in a post on Xbox Wire. “The new sleek design and the ability to watch Blu-Ray movies and stream video in 4K Ultra HD with HDR is sure to make the new Xbox One console one of our most sought after products when it launches later this year.”

The new Xbox One S features a new, slimmer design said to be 40% smaller than the original Xbox One console, plus support for UHD 4K Blu-rays. A 2TB version is due to launch this August for £349.99, with smaller, cheaper SKUs arriving later.

A more powerful Xbox, codenamed Project Scorpio, meanwhile, is due to launch late next year.
