Xbox One S is here and it has been revealed that games have the potential run at a native 4K resolution if the developer chooses to do so.

“If they want to [run at 4K], they can. As you said, if a developer had a game that could use it we are enabling 4K framebuffers, but only on Xbox One S consoles,” Albert Penello, senior director of product marketing and planning at Microsoft, told Digital Foundry.

Obviously we’re not going to see Gears of War 4 at native 4K, but less graphically demanding games could manage to render at 4K.

All games will upscale to 4K, though this is something any 4K TV will also be able to do. HDR is supported for compatible games, but there isn’t any available at the launch of the system.
