If it creates it, says Keiji Inafune.
If Capcom decides to create Devil May Cry 5, it'll be "custom-tailored to what fans want", the Japanese company has said.
In particular Capcom wants the potential game to be well-received by the media, global head of R&D Keiji Inafune told VideoGamer.com at E310 last week.
Rumour that a fifth game in the action slasher series is in the works has been rife in recent months.
In April US game mag Game Informer claimed Heavenly Sword developer Ninja Theory was set to work on a new Devil May Cry game.
While Infanue refused to comment on the rumour, he did insist that the Devil May Cry series was popular enough to continue.
"Yes, there are a lot of fans of the Devil May Cry series," he said. "We need to look at them, analyse what they want in a game, what they don't want in a game, and then take that into account for if we are going to create a future title, and see if there is something we can create that is going to overcome their expectations, as well as create a title that's going to get a lot of critical acclaim and be reviewed quite well.
"We don't just want to come at it and just say, oh it's a popular series, let's make a sequel. We want to say, let's make a sequel that's going to be custom-tailored to what the fans want, and on top of that, prove that, again, it's a great game, it's a fun game, it's got lasting appeal, and it's going to be particularly well-liked by the media as well."
The last title in the series, 2008's Devil May Cry 4, was great, but it wasn't brilliant. It replaced popular franchise protagonist Dante with debutant Nero as main man, which didn't go down too well with fans.

1. Bring new blood to the series by creating new well-developed character (just like how you created Lady and Nero)
2. Invest in the bosses and try to give them more character (like Arkham, Rudra and his bro) and vary their defeating methods
3. Introduce new features to the awesome fighting style (finish moves for example)
4. Keep up the awesome metal music
5. Make up your mind about Dante’s character (1 = cool and awesome, 2 = zombie, 3 = crazy teen, 4 = old man who wants to relive his teen)
6. Benefit from fans’ love for characters like Sparda, Lady, Nero and Vergil (for example have Nero possessed by the Devil Arm Yamato; which is a distant version of a demonic Vergil, or tell us how he got his inhuman arm. For Lady and through DLC, shed light on how she became tough demon slayer before DMC 3, or how she crossed path with the Order of the Sword prior DMC 4. For Vergil and also through DLC, create few missions ending when he fought with Mundus in the Underworld following the end of DMC 3. As for Sparda...the possibilities are endless!)
7. When you create the main story, make it deep and serious, linked personally to the character just like how Lady was linked strongly to DMC 3 story, and just how Dante was deeply involved in DMC 1 story (when I say involved I mean emotionally involved)
8. Try to bring back the gothic feeling that was only achieved in DMC 1 (that castle was creepy like hell!)
9. Keep up the high-quality action cutscenes, and bring more serious voice actors like Dante from DMC 1, Nero, Lady, Arkham, Jester, Credo and Agnus
10. Finally and if you are still out of ideas… GET SOME NEW STAFF ON BOARD!
