The Nintendo 3DS remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time won’t be out at the launch of the 3DS. It won’t be out in the three month launch period, either, but at some point after E3, Nintendo of America president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime has confirmed.

“Mario, Zelda, all of those titles are coming,” Fils-Aime told MTV. “From our perspective, we like to launch titles when they’re ready. And so they’ll be ready, they’ll be ready soon. Just not in that initial time period of late March to early June.”

He added that these games will launch “after E3”.

Despite some of it biggest names missing from the launch, Fils-Aime has great confidence in the handheld’s line-up, pointing to Street Fighter IV, Dead or Alive and Madden, plus the three first-party games.

“Between ‘Nintendogs + Cats’ and ‘Pilotwings,’ those two franchises, either on the original DS or on other legacy systems like the NES or Super NES, have sold tens of millions of copies,” said Fils-Aime. “Those two franchises have a lot of strength all by themselves. ‘Steel Diver’ is a brand new experience, and from a compelling standpoint, we think it’s awfully compelling.”

While Nintendo won’t have the likes of Mario or Link helping to shift consoles at launch, there’s no question that nintendogs + cats will have a huge appeal to the Nintendo DS gamer who has been patiently waiting for a new virtual pet since the launch of Dalmatian and Friends in the summer of 2006.
