Nintendo has now sold 9.2 million Wii U consoles worldwide as of December 31, 2014, the platform holder announced as part of its Q3 financial results this morning.

For the financial year to date (April 1 through December 31) 3.03 million Wii U consoles were sold.

The firm expects full year Wii U sales to reach 3.6 million.

Software sales for the console stand at 52.87 million units, with the major success stories being Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U which have sold 4.77 million and 3.39 million copies respectively.

3DS hardware sales stand at 50.41 million units, with software sales at 215.96 million as of December 31, 2014.

Nintendo says that the new 3DS systems got off to good start in Japan, but sales of 3DS systems outside of Japan “did not grow sufficiently” as a result of the new systems not being available.

Standout games include Pokémon Omega Ruby/Pokémon Alpha Sapphire and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS shifting 9.35 million units and 6.19 million units respectively. Nintendo also notes that Tomodachi Life, Mario Kart 7 and Pokémon X/Pokémon Y “showed steady sales”.

For the nine months ended December 31 Nintendo reported net sales of 442.9 billion yen (of which overseas sales were 323.2 billion yen or 73.0% of the total sales) and operating income was 31.6 billion yen. Ordinary income was 92.3 billion yen and net income was 59.5 billion yen.
