A few months after its initial leaking, Microsoft has formally announced that a mid-generational Xbox Series X refresh codenamed Brooklin is coming soon. More official news is expected to be unveiled in the Fall. We’re bringing you everything we know about Xbox Series X Brooklin refresh from the rumored specs, price speculation, and leaked features so that you’re in the know.

Xbox Series X Brooklin refresh release window prediction

No release date has been confirmed by Microsoft at this time but, as revealed in the Xbox Business Update, more news should be confirmed in the Fall. To be more specific, that would mean a rough unveiling time between September through to November, 2024. We can cast our minds back to the release date of the original Xbox Series X and S to see when this could be.

The Xbox Series X debuted in November 2020 and we can look further to the Xbox One which arrived on November 2013. Alternatively, there’s the mid-generation refresh which happened throughout the Xbox One’s lifespan with the Xbox One X that hit the shelves in November 2017. Based on this prior knowledge, we’re anticipating the Xbox Series X Brooklin to come out in November. It could be announced in September and October.

Xbox Series X Brooklin refresh leaked price

According to the leaked FTC vs Microsoft documents (via IGN), the Brooklin Xbox Series X refresh will be sold “at the same great price” of $499. This means that there’s no price increase from the base unit to the refresh, at least when taking it at its word. The former has a disc drive, the latter appears not to have, so whether or not you’re getting the same exact experience remains to be seen.

No UK, EU or wider international pricing has been leaked yet, but judging from the alleged $499 price tag, we can assume that the Brooklin refresh will be priced identically to the original system in these territories, too. That’s without considering the fact that the Xbox Series X has been on sale frequently throughout 2023, so it’s currently unknown whether this system will replace it or be a new alternative.

Xbox Series X Brooklin refresh leaked specs

As reported in those documents, the Xbox Series X Brooklin refresh will be an entirely digital console similar to the Xbox Series S but sporting an all new design. One image shows a cylindrical design which breaks away from the more conventional big black box “mini fridge” of the first iteration. It appears to feature a smaller footprint and redesigned front I/O, too.

The documents also share what’s new with the Brooklin refresh unit, including Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, and a 6nm process die shrink for the same powerful performance in a smaller package. This means improvements on the sustainability side with “reduced PSU power by 15%” and a new low-power standby mode which is claimed to be “20% of” the current Xbox Series X’s. It’s also made of 100% recycled plastic.

What’s more, going all digital has meant that storage has needed to be stepped up. While the original Xbox Series X shipped with a respectable 1TB NVMe SSD, the Brooklin refresh is reportedly going to debut with 2TB, double the space for some of the best Xbox Series X games on the market. There also appears to be USB-C power delivery for use with an “all-new, more immersive controller”.

Arguably more exciting than a console revision, however, is the all-new controller that’s coming with it. The leaked documents (via IGN) also reveal what appears to be a new Xbox controller which is codenamed “Sebile”. Dubbed as: “the world’s best controller” it looks to include functionality which could rival that of the PS5’s DualSense pad, a much needed upgrade in modern gaming immersion.

Starting with the additions to immersion. Microsoft claims you’ll be able to “feel the game” with new precision haptic feedback, VCA haptics which double as speakers, an accelerometer, as well as quieter buttons and thumbsticks. It’s alleged to feature Bluetooth 5.2 with pairing for mobile devices and cloud gaming, and small quality of life upgrades such as lift to wake and recycled material build.

Less interesting is the refresh coming for the Xbox Series S Refresh which is codenamed Ellewood. It includes the same connectivity upgrades with Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, and a lower power usage. Allegedly, it will be the same price of $299 and ship with the new Xbox Wireless Controller as will the Brooklin, too. This new console claims to feature 1TB storage over the original’s 512GB, for more games to play.

Is there a new Xbox coming in 2024?
