The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s specs and performance have garnered a little bit of attention following on from recent leaks.

Anyone interested in the latest gaming phones probably has their toes pointed at a ‘Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.’ It’s a SoC (System on a Chip) manufactured by Qualcomm, and is widely used in the latest smartphones. A few notable phones with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (the current iteration) are the OnePlus 11, Samsung Galaxy S23, and Ultra.

However, it seems as though the next generation of the Snapdragon 8 has allegedly had a few of its key specifications leaked. So – with the possibility of a new chip launching in the coming months – what specs and performance do we imagine the chip will exhibit?

However, the SoC hasn’t been officially revealed, nor announced. Until it is, we can’t say for certain that it’s going to release at all.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 specs and performance – what we know so far

Recently, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has been the focal point of online chatrooms and forums dedicated to mobile processors. A fan favourite for anyone with an interest in mobile gaming, the Snapdragon chips are widely sought after by phone manufacturers. The fact that Samsung opted for the chips ahead of their own Exynos chips is enough evidence alone.

To circle back, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has been “tipped to arrive with [a] 50% more powerful GPU than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2’s Adreno 740,” via NotebookCheck. The Adreno 740 is a Qualcomm mobile GPU with a 4nm process size. If the next generation is going to be ‘50%’ better than the last, it’s likely going to feature a 3nm process size. This theory is corroborated by other internet speculators, with reliable publishers stating that it’s “certain” to feature a 3nm process.

To put this in perspective, the RTX 4090 is built on a 5nm process size, while the graphics card used in a PS5 uses a 7nm process size. Although, these numbers don’t directly translate to performance, they are a good indication of the quality you’re getting.

Other rumours include the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 trumping Apple’s A16 Bionic Chip – which is circulating on Weibo. If you’re unable to access Weibo, you can see screenshots of the forums on Twitter.

Much of the specs are impossible to pinpoint, with many leakers reporting on different information. Some, such as Revegnus are suggesting it will feature a 1+5+2 architecture, while others believe it will feature a 1+2+3+2 architecture.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is expected to be one of the best mobile gaming processors available. This is a widespread rumour, and it spans from claims it will top the A16 and also increase double-fold on the previous iteration of Snapdragon hardware. However, we haven’t heard much official information about the chip. We’re going to be keeping an eye out for the latest updates, so in the meanwhile you might be interested in comparing the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with the A16 Bionic.
