We’re bringing you our comparison of the RX 7800 XT vs RX 7900 XT and XTX to help you pick your next graphics card.

With the release of the RX 7800 XT it is time to take a look at AMD’s latest entry to the RX 7000 line-up which is aimed at both 1440p and 4K gaming. Alongside massive improvements over its predecessor, the RX 6800 XT, the new card’s release also coincides with the new FSR 3.0 and Hyper-RX features. If you’re looking to purchase it, make sure you know where to buy the RX 7800 XT.

Both the RX 7900 XT and XTX were released in late 2022. The RX 7900 XTX is AMD’s flagship card with the best performance, and the RX 7900 XT is like its little brother, which also offers jaw-dropping numbers. If you want the flagship experience, then make sure you get the best RX 7900 XTX graphics card.

So, are the high-end RX 7900 XT and XTX worth it, or is the RX 7800 XT better value for money?

RX 7800 XT vs RX 7900 XT and XTX – architecture

Make sure you always compare the architecture of the graphics cards you’re considering. That’s because architecture tells you a lot about a card’s performance such as how efficient it is under heavy loads, and what kind of features it supports.

Since the RX 7800 XT, the RX 7900 XT, and the RX 7900 XTX belong to the same generation of GPUs, they are built using the same RDNA 3 architecture. RDNA 3 is a massive upgrade over RDNA 2. It brings both power and performance improvements. For instance, RDNA 3 is the first architecture to use a chiplet design for a GPU. Plus, it is also the first architecture where AMD has moved to TSMC’s 5nm process node. As a result, these RX 7000 series cards are up to 50% more power efficient.

RDNA 3 also brings several key improvements to enhance the overall gaming experience. This includes 2nd gen Raytracing, 2nd gen Infinity Cache, and AI Acceleration. As mentioned earlier, AMD is also releasing FSR 3 and Hyper-RX features. These features are supported by both RX 6000 and 7000 series. FSR 3 brings together upscaled resolution gaming with frame generation, using AI to boost performance. Similarly, Hyper-RX is like a single switch to enable FSR, Radeon Boost, and Radeon Anti-Lag+ for the ultimate experience.

As far as architecture is concerned, all three cards are equal. However, if we go over which cards utilize these new features the most, then the win goes to the RX 7900 XT and XTX. They have more performance and more numbers to better support these features.

The RX 7800 XT, the RX 7900 XT, and the RX 7900 XTX are all next to one another in terms of performance and their specifications show this trajectory. For instance, the RX 7900 XT is clearly better than the RX 7800 XT, and the RX 7900 XTX is ahead of the RX 7900 XT.

The only two places where the RX 7800 XT beats its big sister, the RX 7900 XT, is that it has higher clock speeds and lower TDP. Apart from that, the RX 7900 XT offers more cores, 4GB extra VRAM, and significantly higher memory bandwidth.

Similarly, the RX 7900 XTX takes things to the next level by offering even more cores, 4GB more VRAM, and even higher bandwidth than the RX 7900 XT. This also means that the RX 7900 XT is the least power-efficient, with its TDP rating at 355W.

With that said, there is a clear winner in the specs department, and that’s the RX 7900 XTX. It leaves the RX 7800 XT in the dust like a walk in the park.

RX 7800 XT vs RX 7900 XT and XTX – performance

We cannot compare these graphics cards without going over their performance. The RX 7800 XT is designed to nail 1440p gaming and has a decent 4K gaming performance too.

Meanwhile, we are well aware of how well the RX 7900 XT and XTX perform. On average, the RX 7900 XTX should give you a solid 250 FPS at 1080p, 210 FPS at 1440p, and 130 FPS at 4K. Similarly, the XT variant should be slightly lower, with 210-220 average FPS at 1080p, 180 FPS at 1440p, and 110 FPS at 4K.

The performance shows that the RX 7800 XT stands no chance against its big brothers, and that’s understandable. Therefore, if you want the best possible FPS, you should consider the RX 7900 XT or XTX.

RX 7800 XT vs RX 7900 XT and XTX – price comparison

Last but not least, we have the price. AMD has listed the RX 7800 XT at $500. Considering its predecessor’s list price, we say that $500 is a pretty good number for a 1440p beast. Its AIB variants to fall in the same ballpark, with high-end premium cards nearing $530-$540.

At launch, the RX 7900 XT and XTX were $900 and $1000, respectively. This makes the RX 7800 XT half the price of the RX 7900 XTX, which is understandable because it also offers basically half the performance. At the moment, you can get an RX 7900 XTX from $970 to $1100 and the RX 7900 XT from $750 to $850.

If budget is your main concern, then the RX 7800 XT is your best option. It is the cheapest of the three, and it will still offer good performance.
