AMD has dropped the RX 7600 and, excitingly, it undercuts the new RTX 4060 Ti on price while offering similar performance. This is sure to make it a popular card and might even tempt some Nvidia loyalists across the aisle.
It’s not just other brand-new cards the RX 7600 will be going up against though. If AMD wants this card to truly sell well, they’ll have to convince gamers it’s worth upgrading to from their current graphics card. From the table above you can get a sense of how the RX 7600 look in comparison to the RX 5700. It might seem like the RX 5700 actually has the better specs. It’s true that it does have the better bandwidth, 448GB/s vs 288GB/s for the RX 7600. This means more data can be transferred from the cards VRAM. This is facilitated by the larger memory bus.
The RX 5700 even has a shade more stream processors. These are the units which do much of the leg work of graphics creation, executing the calculations necessary.
However, this is misleading. Overall, the RX 7600 has the flight better performance as we’ll get more into later. Part of this is thanks to its superior boost and base clock speeds, though a lot also comes down to the architecture.
RX 7600 vs RX 5700 – architecture
The RX 7600 features the elite RDNA 3 GPU architecture. This is a full two generations head of the RDNA architecture found in the RX 5700. So what does this actually mean for performance?
The superior performance of RDNA 3 vs RDNA comes down to a mixture of new technologies and improved old ones. For example, both RDNA and RDNA 3 have compute units but the ones in RDNA 3 are more advanced.
There’s then a tonne of new technologies such as second-generation Raytracing accelerators, Infinity cache, AI acceleration and a chiplet design. These all have a positive impact on performance. In the case of the infinity cache and the chiplet design, overall power is increased. Meanwhile, the AI and raytracing accelerators make targeted optimisation in specific areas.
RX 7600 vs RX 5700 – performance
Now that we have the specs covered, let’s see how they could translate to gaming ability. Overall, as predicted, the RX 7600 has better performance. It is one of the best GPUs for 1080p, especially considering its reasonable price. That said, it primarily achieves higher speeds in HD gaming, and at higher resolutions, the differences in performance between these two cards start to narrow.
The RX 5700 also has good 1080p performance and can achieve okay frame rates at 1440p, though in some games it will struggle to get above 60. One thing it does lack completely is ray tracing, which the RX 7600 has.
RX 7600 vs RX 5700 – price
The RX 7600 was always going to be going head to head vs the RTX 4060 Ti on price. Typically AMD cards are more affordable than their Nvidia counterparts and that is the case here again.
The RX 7600 launched with a recommended price of $269. This is impressively low and significantly cheaper than the RX 6600 when it came out.
The RX 5700 meanwhile, launched for $349. Remember this was back in 2019 so since then the price has dropped a bit, being now available for around $240, though this is for a renewed version.
RX 7600 vs RX 5700 – final word
We can say with some confidence that the RX 7600 is a more sensible investment than buying the RX 5700. Unless you have found an unbelievably good second deal, buying the latest generation of GPUs gives you access to so many technological advancements and shouldn’t end up actually costing you much more.
However, this won’t be a decision many people were considering anyway. It’s much more likely that gamers who already own the RX 5700 will be wondering whether to upgrade to the RX 7600. This comes down much more to personal preference.
For a low price, the RX 7600 offers you a boost in performance, as well as access to ray tracing, something which the RX 5700 lacks entirely. However, the performance changes are not huge, and only really significant at 1080p. If you have the budget to allow for it, going for something like the best RTX 4070, will allow you to feel more of the benefits of upgrading.
