Many gaming enthusiasts will be wondering whether the ASUS ROG Ally supports third party external GPUs if they’re wanting to take their handheld’s performance to the next level.
Anyone who’s had a laptop or handheld with an incredibly average performance will know how much an eGPU can do for FPS, graphics rendering and more. The ROG Ally boasts an AMD RDNA 3-based graphics card, capable of delivering 1080p resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Though this is a very impressive performance, many fans are wondering if the Ally supports third party external GPUs in the hope of making the Ally double up as a regular gaming PC.
Does the ASUS ROG Ally support third party eGPUs?
The ROG Ally does not support third party external GPUs. Those looking to boost the performance of their Ally will have to do so within ASUS ROG’s own ecosystem due to the absence of adaptors for regular USB-C eGPUs. This custom connection is main reason why third party external GPUs won’t be able to connect to the Ally. Those determined to play esports with higher FPS will have to look at the ROG XG Mobile series and look deep into their pockets.
The 2023 model offers up a Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 mobile graphics chip which connects through a proprietary PCIe connection. It has a strong focus on portability, complimenting the Ally’s travel companion credentials as slim and lightweight handheld. It’s certainly amongst the best ASUS ROG Ally accessories, though that doesn’t mean it comes cheap.

While it’s a shame that the ROG Ally does not support third party external GPUs, this could change in the future with a PCIe adapter.
