The latest software update for the ASUS ROG Ally is the BIOS 322, aimed to improve the Ally’s temperature management and fix a bug that causes the Ally to freeze during the boot sequence.

The ROG Ally launched in June to some well-deserved hype, though not without a few performance and software issues that needed ironing out. The 319 update had people wanting to roll back to 317 because of the perceived performance drop. Understandably then, people are wondering whether they should go ahead with the BIOS 322 update. If you’re unsure how to update ASUS ROG Ally BIOS, we’ve put together a guide to help.

What is BIOS 322 on ROG Ally?

The BIOS 322 update resolves the bug that caused the Ally to freeze at the boot up loading screen. Those who set a password in BIOS mode experienced the device get stuck during the loading sequence. This issue has been resolved with the update.

The update also address the Ally’s overheating issue by changing the fan speeds for temperature management. The fan’s curve has been altered from 30dBA to 35dBA in Turnbo mode when plugged in, and from 25dBA to 30 dBA in Turbo mode when using the battery. The update also changes the minimum fan speed in Maual mode when the device hits a certain temperature. There’s still some discussion about whether the BIOS 322 update has resolved this issue, and how well it works which we’ll discuss below.

Should you update to BIOS 322 on ROG Ally?

From what we can gather on Reddit, BIOS 322 appears to have little to no negative performance impact on the Ally. Some users have eve reported “some good fps boosts” since upgrading.

However, others are wary of updating to BIOS 322 update because of the louder fan noise. Compared to the Steam Deck, the ROG Ally on launch had the advantage of being a much quieter handheld. The BIOS 322 update absolutely changes this, potentially making the ROG Ally fans potentially louder. If this really bothers you, you can adjust your fans to set it at whatever you want. Just be weary that cooling can make a huge difference to performance, allowing for greater consistency and even higher clock speeds. A safer alternative would be to use headphones while playing so you’re not listening to the fan noise.

Final word

Overall, the only downside of BIOS 322 seems to be the fan noise, which is unfortunately just one of those things. Of course, there’s always the option to roll back the update if you can’t stand the louder fans, though ultimately your Ally’s performance should be your top priority. In the meantime, make sure you check out the best Ally settings for performance and battery life.
