With AMD having released most of their Zen 4 line-up, many buyers are now wondering when the AMD Zen 5 release date could be, and whether it’s worth waiting for.

AMD first introduced its new Zen 4 architecture in September 2022. Since its release, its performance, power efficiency and clock speeds have certainly raised some eyebrows (in a good way).

It’s understandable then that PC users are keen for news on when to expect Zen 5. Well, our first clue came from AMD’s announcement at the Ryzen 7000 series event in August 2022. It was confirmed that Zen 5 was “on track” for a 2024 release.

With our ears to the floor, we’ve heard more than a few whispers since Zen 5 was first rumoured from AMD’s annoucement. We’ve now heard that AMD is preparing for Ryzen 8000 Granite Ridge Zen 5 processors, as evidenced by DigiTimes. The 8000 Zen 5 processors will no doubt be of great interest to enthusiasts, though it’s still looking like they’ll be waiting at least until “the end of 2024”, according to Digi Times.

However, it’s worth adding that there’s still a lot of uncertainty around whether we can expect a 4nm or 5nm TSMC process node. But for now, let’s go a little deeper in speculating when Zen 5 will be out.

AMD Zen 5 release date speculation

We’ve now had confirmation from AMD that we’ll start seeing the first Zen 5 CPUs in 2024.

To get an idea of AMD’s CPU timeline, we first saw Zen 2 CPUs in August 2019. Since then, we’ve seen new process nodes every couple of years.

  • Zen – March 2017
  • Zen 2 – August 2019
  • Zen 3 – November 2020
  • Zen 4 – September 2022

Unfortunately for those amateur detectives out there, AMD hasn’t stuck to a specific month of releases. This makes it deliberately tricky to be sure when exactly when Zen 5 will arrive.

Team Red has not yet finished their mammoth launch of Zen 4-based CPUs either, so don’t expect to see Zen 5 anytime soon. We’re still waiting to see the RDNA 3+-powered APUs specifically geared toward budget gamers released.

AMD Zen 5 spec rumours

While we’re still in the speculation stage for Zen 5, AMD has given us a few clues to go off until we’re given the more concrete stuff.

Compared to Zen 3, Zen 4 has brought a higher cache and clock rate. At the same time, Ryzen 7000 CPUs perform particularly well when it comes to power efficiency. Simply take a look at our comparison between Ryzen 7 5800X3D vs 7800X3D to see for yourself.

With these significant performance gains, many PC users are wondering whether the possibility of Zen 5.

According to RedGamingTech, Zen 5 chips are expected to adopt a hybrid architecture, similar to Intel Alder Lake architecture. The leaker also claims that the jump between Zen 4 to Zen 5 will be bigger than the jump between Zen 3 to Zen 4.

Finally, RedGamingTech also claims that we’ll see changes to the cache in Zen 5 processors, particularly with L3 cache to allow for a reduced die size and lower latency. Once again, these are nothing else but rumours.

It’s not loads to be going off, but just enough to keep things interesting as we wait to see the Ryzen 8000 series CPUs. Time will tell.

And as always, we’ll be updating this page with the latest news for Zen 5 as we hear it.
