Rebellion has officially announced Sniper Elite 4, the next game in its hit shooter series heading to PS4, Xbox One and PC in 2016.

Set immediately after Sniper Elite 3, the new game sends marksman Karl Fairburne to the forests, mountains and coastal towns of 1943 Italy, where he must fight alongside the Italian Resistance to help free their country “and defeat a terrifying new threat”.

Alongside the campaign, the game will feature dedicated co-op and competitive multiplayer modes, and will be developed and published by Rebellion, dropping Sniper Elite 2 and 3’s publisher 505 Games.

It’ll also be the first game in the series to drop support for last-gen consoles, allowing Rebellion to create maps “many times the size of those seen in Sniper Elite 3” and “deliver the definitive World War Two shooter for a generation”. It’ll run at native 1080p on both PS4 and Xbox One, the developer says.

Rumours of Sniper Elite 4 first emerged online after VideoGamer discovered a mention of the game on LinkedIn. The reference was later removed.

A more precise release window has yet to be confirmed, but you can expect to see it on all three platforms later this year. For the first look, check out the trailer below.
