Racing games are really good and everybody likes them. Everybody also quite likes dragons, so it’s a real wonder it’s taken so long for Dragon Rally to be developed. We trekked to the top of Ben Nevis and perched down at the tip with project director Gwynevere Scales to discuss Dragon Rally’s impact on gameplay, graphics, and sound:

Q: What’s better – polished graphics or visceral gameplay? And why?

Gwynevere Scales: That’s a tough question – obviously visceral gameplay is an incredibly important part of any modern game, but at the same time – how can you expect gamers to be able to tell the gameplay is visceral without sufficiently polished graphics? If things look a bit fuzzy, it’s entirely possible that they’ll just mistake it for being primevel or primitive.

Q: Why should I buy Dragon Rally when I could just play DiRT or possibly another rally game?

GS: None of those games feature fully licensed dragons. We’re aware that other games are offering an authentic rally driving experience that features dragons, but we feel the level of detail and accuracy within Dragon Rally puts us head and shoulders above the competition. We’ve worked with some of the world’s leading dragonologists to ensure the utmost degree of historical accuracy.

Q: Is the 3DS just a passing fad?

GS: It’s certainly a fun little toy, but in terms of the 3D being shown it simply isn’t that impressive. Dragon Rally is set to use some of the most impressive 3D technology ever seen in videogames; when you see the game in action, it literally looks like the dragons are coming out of the game and into your living room. Keep an eye on Inside Xbox later today for some live gameplay footage, where hopefully you’ll be able to get an idea of what we’re talking about.

Q: Could we expect to see Kinect and Move features incorporated into Dragon Rally?

GS: It’s certainly something we’ve thought about considerably, but we just don’t feel it stays true to the dragon brand. It’s not out of the question at this stage, but currently it’s not being implemented, no.

Q: Would you mind if customers purchased Dragon Rally second-hand?

GS: If people want to buy second hand then that’s fine. We totally understand that second hand is a matter of consumer choice – and if fans decide they’d rather give 100% of the money they’re spending to the people that put the games on the shelves rather than funding the people who actually made the game they’re buying, then that’s absolutely fine with us. We have however decided to reward fans by including a code in all new boxed copies that will unlock the ability to drive cars within the game.

Dragon Rally is scheduled to be released on Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii, DS, 3DS, Atari Lynx, PS2, and Commodore 64 in August 2019. You can also follow the game on Twitter.
