Nintendo has posted a nearly 14-minute video showing brand new gameplay from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

The showcase was led by series producer Eiji Aonuma, showing off Link bounding around the Sky Islands high above Hyrule – where most of the game will take place.

We got to see some brand new enemies – such as the Construct – and some new abilities like Fuse and Ultrahand.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Fuse & Ultrahand

While weapon degradation is still a thing – sorry to those who didn’t enjoy that mechanic – you’ll now be able to make brand new weapons by fusing weapons together with other weapons and objects in the world.

You’ll even be able to fuse items to arrows and ammos to create elemental attacks – for example, we were shown Link attaching some ice-elemental material to an arrow to make freeze arrows. Or you can attach eyeballs (as you do) to make homing arrows!

A further new ability, named Ultrahand, allows you to also use this sticking things together mechanic to stick items together in the world – with the example given of attaching three logs together as a makeshift raft.

As you can imagine, these new mechanics should offer plenty of opportunities for interacting with the world and exploring in entirely new ways.

In fact – it was revealed that many of the vehicles seen in previous trailers – like the airship – are actually made from objects in the world, giving players an idea of how powerful this new ability is.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Recall & Ascend

A couple of new traversal abilities meanwhile include Recall and Ascend. First of all, Recall allows you to reverse the flow of time of objects in the world – for example, allowing you to return a fallen rock to its original location (and letting you ride it in the process).

Meanwhile – Ascend will allow Link to pass all the way through – and appear on the top without having to climb up the side and use precious stamina. There’ll be some restrictions, of course, but for the most part it’ll be a quick way to get to the top of any caves to the mountains above.

That’s all we got to see for now, but it was a tantalising glimpse at what’s in store when the full game arrives. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom launches on Nintendo Switch on May 12, 2023.
