The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword earned plenty of praise from critics and gamers on its release last year (including a 10/10 from us), but that doesn’t mean there will be spin-off titles like there were with the GameCube’s Wind Waker.
Speaking to Game Informer about releasing more games in the Skyward Sword style or in the same world, Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma made it clear that such games wouldn’t be easy.
“With Wind Waker, the graphics were suited to handheld gaming. Also the game ended with Link embarking on a journey, so it left open the possibility of what comes after the game. With Skyward Sword, positioning it as the first Zelda game means everything else connects to it and comes after it. It becomes a little bit difficult to do something else within that world and certainly much more difficult to do something that comes before it.”
Wind Waker saw two DS spin-offs in the form of Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks.
It’s likely then that any Zelda games coming to the Wii U or 3DS in the future won’t be spin-offs from Skyward Sword – although this hasn’t been totally ruled out by Nintendo.
