Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom has only been commercially available for about an hour (as of the time of writing), and players have already hacked it to run at 120fps on PC emulators.
Reviews using the native hardware have brought up some valid concerns, with it inheriting “Link’s Awakening’s intermittent frame-rate issues, albeit to a lesser extent,” according to Gamespot. That doesn’t seem to be much of an issue for those playing the leaked ROM file available even before the reviews had come out.
Unfortunately for Nintendo, a version of the game was available online before launch, giving hackers, modders, and dataminers the opportunity to rig it up on emulators such as Ryujinx.
The video above shows off Echoes of Wisdom performing nearly five or six times better than on Nintendo’s hardware with the (visually estimated) average frame rate around the 120-130 fps mark. At times though, the fps peaked well above 500. Those anomalies tended to occur while inside dungeons, with far less ‘open’ environments to render.
Reznoire, the enthusiast showcasing the game, benchmarked it using an Intel i9-14900K, an RTX 4090 OC, and 48GB of DDR5 RAM. This is far beyond the average set-up that most will be using, mind, though most average gaming set-ups will hit similar rates.
With hardware such as that, you’d generally expect it break through the 200 or 300 mark, though the reason that this is notable is due to the fps caps usually locking games down on launch. At least with Tears of the Kingdom, it took a few days to get it running uncapped.
My curiosity is reminding me of Dark Souls. Uncapping the game in environment-centric games like that often end up in disastrous outcomes – infinitely falling down ladders, for example. I wonder if the new Legends of Zelda game is going to suffer from similar bugs while emulated on PC.
Echoes of Wisdom is Nintendo’s latest iteration of the series. It innovates through interactive gameplay elements and puzzle solving akin to the rest of the top-down Zelda games. It is now available on Nintendo Switch.
