A Wii U system update has rolled out which makes it possible to display classic Wii titles on the Wii U GamePad.

Sadly you won’t be able to use the buttons on the GamePad to play Wii games, instead having to use a Wii Remote.

“Users can now choose to display Wii software either on just the TV, or on both the TV and Wii U GamePad,” Nintendo wrote, adding that “when displaying Wii software on the TV and GamePad, the GamePad buttons cannot be used to control the game. A Wii Remote/Wii Remote Plus is required to control the game, using the GamePad’s sensor bar.”

The update also adds support for USB keyboard input and automatic software downloads, amongst other tweaks and additions.

It’s a real shame you won’t be able to play Wii games using the GamePad, but we can see the GamePad screen being useful for those unable to use the main TV.
