Bandai Namco has announced that the tiny pixelated creature that lived in a plastic keychain egg in the 90s will make a return next year as My Tamagotchi Forever. 2018 will see Tamagotchi coming to your mobile devices and smartphones on iOS and Android.

Now a whole new generation will learn the joy of Tamagotchi: all the fun of cleaning up a small animal’s faeces, but without being able to actually cuddle it. This time, however, the Tamagotchi have a new look. They’re 3D and colourful, and live in a town called Tamatown, which looks a bit like Animal Crossing.

Like the 90s version, you can play mini games and evolve your Tamagotchi in different ways depending on how you care for it. This announcement also serves as a reminder that the original Tamagotchi are now 20 years old. Death comes to us all.

My Tamagotchi Forever is out some time in 2018 for iOS and Android. Right now there’s a competition to inspire an actual Tamagotchi in the game, so you can head over to the website to register your interest.
