Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has said that he was “surprised” to learn that Rise of the Tomb Raider would be an Xbox exclusive next year, but nevertheless hopes that the game will come to PS4 “eventually”.

Speaking to Eurogamer about Microsoft’s announcement, Yoshida stated that it was “very interesting the way [Xbox boss] Phil Spencer said, what we are saying is, in holiday 2015 Tomb Raider is exclusive to Xbox,” before adding that Sony “didn’t anticipate something like this would happen.”

He continued: “I hope the game will come out eventually on PS4. But how can I tell? Other than that cryptic message by Phil Spencer.”

Microsoft announced last week that Rise of the Tomb Raider would be “launching in holiday 2015, exclusively on Xbox”. However, confusion over whether the game would remain a permanent or timed exclusive soon spread, forcing Spencer to clarify that the deal “has a duration”.

Nevertheless, the announcement angered fans who had been hoping to play Rise of the Tomb Raider on PC and PS4 next year, with many expressing their disappointment at Microsoft, Square Enix and developer Crystal Dynamics.

It still isn’t clear whether the game will or will not launch on PS4 and PC at a later date.

“It was a very emotional response,” Yoshida added.
