The XCOM-inspired sandbox strategy game Xenonauts 2 is set to make its way into early access on July 18 on PC via Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store. Developed by Goldhawk Interactive, Xenonauts 2 will have you travel the globe in an effort to “investigate and repel alien activity.”
Set in an alternate timeline which never saw an end to the Cold War, Xenonauts 2 will allow players to take charge of a multinational organization tasked with preventing any alien incursions while learning the outer space adversary’s “true objectives as the war for humanity’s survival escalates.” According to the development team, the game will allow you “complete strategic freedom” as you construct a global network of bases while arming and training elite squads to deal with the alien threat.
While on-the-ground combat is a staple of the XCOM series that Xenonauts 2 takes inspiration from, the game is also set to offer “interactive real-time aerial engagements, where entire fighter wings can engage alien ships at once.” You’ll be tasked with setting up bases anywhere around the globe, allowing you to adapt your own strategy when encountering enemy forces. However, the game isn’t set to be purely offensive combat based as you’ll have to defend any bases you establish from alien attacks both on the ground and in the air.
You aren’t the only army with diverse combat options either. The alien invaders will come in all shapes and sizes with the aid of human sympathizers. With your continued efforts to upgrade and sustain your outfit veteran troops will have the option to specialize and test some “cutting-edge weapons and armour.”
While Xenonauts 2 is the second game in the series after the release of 2014’s Xenonauts, Hooded Horse has noted that the sequel is “more a re-imagining of the original vision, featuring a modern engine, a new setting, and refined mechanics built for long-time fans and new strategy gamers alike.” Xenonauts 2 is set to release into early access on July 18, 2023, on PC.
In other XCOM-related news, it was announced back at the end of February that XCOM & Marvel’s Midnight Suns Creative Director Jake Solomon is leaving Firaxis Games.
