2K Marin’s reboot of the XCOM franchise (formerly X-Com) has slipped from its planned March 2012 release date, according to publisher Take-Two.

The first person strategy/action hybrid will now be released in the publisher’s next fiscal year. In real terms, that means it could be out anytime between next April and March 2013.

As a result of the shift, XCOM will no longer have to compete with Mass Effect 3, which is due on March 6.

I’m speculating here, but I’d imagine that XCOM will be out sooner rather than later within that 12 month timeframe.

We don’t have release dates for XCOM, Borderlands 2 or BioShock Infinite, but there’s no doubt that the latter games will be far more important to TakeTwo. XCOM has been in development for quite a while now, and it’ll be a trickier game to sell to the public.

Expect to see it surface in the first half of 2012, with Borderlands and BioShock arriving after the summer. I’m guessing August and October respectively.
