Xbox One sold 25,000 more units than PS4 in the UK during the month of October, GfK sales figures seen by GamesIndustry have revealed. The system sold just shy of 100k at 99,496.

October’s success for Xbox One followed a narrow victory for the platform in September, when it beat the PS4 by only 1,500 units.

In October Xbox One sales accounted for 56 per cent of the UK console market, PS4 took 42 per cent and Wii U two per cent.

“Thanks to our fans, Xbox One was the best-selling console in October, the second month in a row in the UK, according to GfK Entertainment,” said Xbox UK marketing director Harvey Eagle.

“It’s great to see such enthusiasm for the new Xbox One S range of consoles including FIFA 17, Gears of War 4, Battlefield 1 and now – for the first time – Minecraft. All of which are available to purchase now.”

Xbox One sales have been buoyed by the September launch of the Xbox One S, offering 4K features and a slimmer look for around £249 including a new release game. Meanwhile Sony fans may have skipped the slim PS4 in favour of waiting for next week’s PS4 Pro. The Pro is a more powerful 4K gaming system, though it carries a £100 price premium over the Xbox One S base 512GB model.

GamesIndustry notes that Xbox One’s new found momentum has in fact done very little to eat away at the substantial install base lead currently enjoyed by PS4. However, should Xbox One come out on top during the November and December holiday shopping months it may signal a more significant change in consumer interest.
