Xbox One users will require an external hard drive to make use of the forthcoming TV DVR functionality, Microsoft has told Gamespot. Users who only have the console’s internal storage and Digital TV Tuner will be limited to the existing free-to-air broadcasting.

“You need an external hard-drive specifically for DVR because we want to keep the [storage] paths optimized between playing games and watching TV,” said Dashboard redesign project lead Richard Irving. “We don’t want them to interact with each other.”

The new DVR functions will be part of a complete overhaul of the Xbox One user interface, with the current Windows 8-style design being dropped in favour of something panel-based.

Even if an external drive wasn’t a requirement, it would be a stretch to record TV and have enough space for games. Many Xbox One users already make use of external drives as all Xbox One games must be installed to the hard drive. With games now stretching to 50GB and more in size, that 500GB is used up very quickly.
