A new update is coming to Xbox One later this year that will upgrade the console to run on Windows 10.

The system currently operates on a modified version of Windows 8.

Microsoft says that the update will allow for “seamless” cross-platform play between Xbox One and PC players, and let developers “extend their [Windows 10] applications to the television”.

“As you know, Xbox One runs on Windows today for its app environment,” said Xbox Wire editor-in-chief Will Tuttle. “Later this year we’ll update to Windows 10 to enable seamless interaction with PC gamers and to give developers who want to extend their applications to the television an easy path to do so.”

Don’t expect your Xbox One to suddenly feature a Start button or let you run PC software, of course. While it’s still unclear whether the update will include any alterations to the dashboard, it won’t suddenly turn your console into a PC.

Microsoft announced its plans for Xbox One and Windows 10 last night, revealing that Windows 10 users will be able to stream their Xbox One games directly to their PC and keep track of their Xbox Live profile through a new Xbox app.

The new operating system is due to roll out later this year.
