The latest Xbox One system update introducing support for external storage devices has begun rolling out to all users, Microsoft has announced.

The update lets Xbox One users plug in an external USB 3.0 hard drive which they can use to install games and additional content, with the console supporting up to 16TB worth of external storage.

Initial reports from users previewing the update suggest that installing games to certain external hard drives, particularly those that run at 7200 RPM, can improve the load times of certain games. One user claims that using an external HDD can help reduce the load times of Forza Motorsport 5 and Dead Rising 3 by around 33 per cent.

The update also removes the Xbox Live Gold requirement from entertainment apps like Netflix and Twitch (also applies to Xbox 360 entertainment apps), and introduces real name support allowing players to display their real name alongside their Xbox Live gamertag. The function can be customised to allow your name to be displayed to all friends or a selection of friends.

To download the update manually, head to the Settings menu.
