Shacknews reports that gamers currently experiencing free online multiplayer over Xbox LIVE with only a Silver account will continue to do so until the planned autumn system update is released.

Titles currently offering free online multiplayer are Universe at War, Shadowrun and Lost Planet: Colonies, each of which support cross-platform play (PC to Xbox 360).

“For a limited time, we are offering free online multiplayer on Xbox 360/Games for Windows titles that offer LIVE cross platform play. This promotion won’t last, so we encourage everyone to take advantage of it while they can,” said an MS rep.

The rep concluded: “When the new Xbox experience launches this fall all multiplayer gaming on Xbox 360 will be for Gold members only.”

It had been rumoured that the free online multiplayer for these select titles was the start of a move to free online multiplayer across the entire Xbox 360 catalogue, a move that would bring the service in-line with Games for Windows Live.

With Microsoft having recently announced that Games for Windows LIVE will offer the complete online multiplayer service for free, do you think it’s time MS does the same with Xbox LIVE? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
