Both the Xbox Series X and Xbox Game Pass are set to receive a price hike across multiple regions. While PC Game Pass and the Xbox Series S remain unaffected, Xbox users have been reacting to the news on social media with some thinking the price is just getting too steep.

Following a report from The Verge, the new Game Pass pricing for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and Game Pass for console is set to come in on July 6, 2023. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions are set to rise from $14.99 a month by $2 to $16.99 a month (€14.99 / £12.99). Xbox Game Pass for console will also be raised from its original $9.99 a month to $10.99 a month (€10.99 / £8.99). Despite these changes, there has been no price adjustment to PC Game Pass pricing.

If you’re currently an existing Game Pass or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriber the price increase won’t come into effect until August 13, 2023, or September 13, 2023, in Germany. If you have a yearly code for either of the subscriptions the price increase won’t take effect until you look to renew your subscription. However, any new subscribers will be changed by the increased rate immediately on July 6th.

Xbox and Game Pass users have been reacting to the news on the Xbox Reddit page with one user saying, “I know it’s only a $2 difference, but $16.99 is a bit harder to swallow on a monthly basis compared to $14.99. especially when there’s no official yearly option offered like how Sony has a 12-month PS Plus Premium plan for $119.99.”

With the news of the price increase some players have even been contemplating getting rid of their Game Pass subscription for the time being with user TREYdanger asking, “Is there any downside to cancelling game pass sub for like 1-2 months, picking it back up, rinse, repeat? There’s nothing I’m really itching to play on it currently until maybe Starfield. Plus I recently purchased Diablo 4 and Hogwarts Legacy which should keep me busy enough.”

This recent announcement will likely lead more players to be highly critical of the games Game Pass provides, and while the Xbox Games Showcase 2023 showed off some great games, many of them aren’t coming to the console until 2024.
