Sea of Thieves developer Rare has reportedly ended development of its long-missing gorgeous exclusive game Everwild. Reportedly in development for around a decade, the mysterious nature-themed adventure is said to be scrapped.

Everwild scrapped at Rare

At the time of writing, Xbox is conducting layoffs across its massive workforce after spending billions to acquire dozens of studios and tens of thousands of workers. 9,100 workers across Microsoft have reportedly been laid off including game developers at King, Zenimax and more.

Alongsidde the layoffs, Rare has allegedly been told to stop development on Everwild, a game that started development in 2014. The game was shown at the XO19 presentation in November 2019 and has reportedly been rebooted in 2021.

Later reports from 2024 claimed that Everwild development was continually well, despite multiple reboots. Unfortunately, amid the layoffs, the long in-development project has reportedly been scrapped, according to VGC.

According to the report, Rare employees working on the project are likely to lose their jobs as a result of the game’s cancellation. At the time of writing, no official layoffs at Rare have been announced.

“We’ve been able to give those teams time in what they’re doing which is good and still have a portfolio like we have,” Xbox boss Phil Spencer said of Everwild earlier this year. “It’s like a dream that Matt (Booty) and I have had for a long time, so it’s finally good to be there. We can give those teams time.”

Rare was originally acquired by Microsoft way back in 2002, and the developer’s reputation since has suffered. While the studio worked on countless hits during its stint with Nintendo, Rare’s work under Microsoft has resulted in mediocre releases and countless project cancellations over the past two decades.

One hit during the developer’s time at Xbox is the still-ongoing online pirate game Sea of Thieves which is receiving multiple updates. Unfortunately, there’s still no word on what else the studio is working on.
