According to Media Create, the top selling video game in Japan for the week ending August 3, 2008 was SEGA’s Phantasy Star Portable for PSP. The RPG sold an impressive 341,700 units in its first week and managed to fend off popular Nintendo DS new release Rhythm Tengoku Gold (212,877 units).

Square Enix’s Dragon Quest V on Nintendo DS also continued to sell well, with a further 111,836 units bringing its total ever closer to one million units. Namco Bandai’s SoulCalibur IV on PS3 is a new entry at No.4 with 74,607 units, over double the sales of the Xbox 360 version which debuted at No.6 with 34,786 units.

Sales of Sony’s PSP are down from last week’s 67,452 units to a still respectable 61,181. Meanwhile the DS managed a small gain from 56,968 units to 57,398 units and narrowed the gap to the PSP to under 4,000 units. Wii sales remain steady at 41,109, up from 41,024 units last week.

The PS3 continues to show signs that its MGS4 fuelled popularity is long gone, with sales falling once again. This week the console dropped from 10,692 units to 9,508 units. It’s quite the opposite story for the Xbox 360 with sales showing a steady increase in recent weeks. Microsoft’s console achieved sales of 5,359 units for the week ending August 3 and with Tales of Vesperia gaining plenty of attention it’s highly likely the console will receive a huge sales boost for the week ending August 10.
