The classic six-player X-Men arcade game from 1992 is to be released on Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network, Konami announced at last weekend’s New York Comic Con.

The arcade game featured support for an impressive six players on the one cabinet and allowed players to take control of Cyclops, Colossus, Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler, or Dazzler.

The remake will feature the same cheesy soundtrack and has been updated to offer drop-in, drop-out online cooperative play. No firm release date has been announced, but Konami has said it will be available this year.

X-Men was a favourite of many an arcade dweller in the early ’90s and its release on home consoles complete with online cooperative play is long overdue. With modern day cooperative brawlers Castle Crashers and Scott Pilgrim proving popular, X-Men should find a ready-made audience on its release.
