THQ and JAKKS have today announced the development of WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009, the latest in the multi-million selling WWE video game series. To date WWE SmackDown/SmackDown vs. Raw licensed video games have shipped more than 37 million units worldwide since 1999.

“With dynamic new features and the extension of our gameplay experience through downloadable content, WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 will bring more console, handheld and wireless gamers together to enjoy the virtual world of WWE,” said Bob Aniello, senior vice president, worldwide marketing, THQ.

Xbox 360, PS3, PSP and PS2 versions of the game will introduce a brand new tag-team experience, allowing players to build momentum and attributes, eliminate opponents with high impact double teams and finishers, and get the “hot tag” for the win.

The franchise’s creation system is also being expanded to include a Create-A-Finisher option, while the new Road to WrestleMania game mode lets players experience cooperative storylines for the first time. WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 also promises a robust online multiplayer experience and for the first time downloadable content.

The Wii edition builds on last year’s game, expanding its match type options and offering players more ways to enter a pick-up-and-play experience. The Wii version will also feature interactive entrances and victory scenes, a variety of new weapons and the debut of online play.

The DS game will sport a new combination of stylus and d-pad controls and a redesigned Season Mode, which takes a role-playing approach and enables players to interact with Superstars, upgrade their abilities and complete missions on a quest towards legendary goals. The handheld game will also feature a larger Superstar roster and the inclusion of Create-A-Superstar.

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 is scheduled for release this autumn.
