Free-to-play is not right for World of Warcraft, according to Blizzard head Mike Morhaime.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Morhaime explained that there is no reason for an MMO as profitable as World of Warcraft to go the free-to-play path.

“I think that there’s an underlying, a fundamental assumption right now, that the less you charge, the more money you make. Which isn’t true,” he said.

“And it doesn’t necessarily make for a better game. I mean, everybody likes free… I think that definitely, players have seen a lot of really great quality free-to-play experiences, but I’m not sure it’s the best model for us right now.”

While World of Warcraft is still incredibly profitable, the game has continued to lose its subscriber-base over the last year since the release of the expansion pack Cataclysm.

Even while the stigma around free-to-play is subsiding, the model is still mainly targeted by lower-end MMOs that fail to gain the attention of the mass market. So it’s unlikely we’ll ever see World of Warcraft embrace anything other than subscription models.
