World of Warcraft has lost 1.1 million subscribers in the last six months, according to Blizzard.

The MMO’s subscriber-rate has been slowly dropping since the release of its expansion, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, and has continued to fall by 10 per cent, Massively reports.

In an investor call today CEO Mike Morhaime explained the biggest loss in subscribers has been seen in the East.

However, the company has nearly tripled its profit for the quarter since last year, and drawn in $148 million in profit.

The drop in subscribers may in part explain the recent lay-off of Blizzard’s senior level designer John Staats, said to have been working on the company’s upcoming MMO.

It will be interesting to see whether Blizzard’s upcoming expansion, World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, will have a great effect on subscription numbers. The game is designed largely for a casual audience and may end up appealing to an entirely new group of players.
