World of Warcraft has been found to improve the spatial awareness and attention levels of the elderly, according to a recent North Carolina State University study.

The study paid attention to the cognitive function of volunteers aged between 60 and 77, in which one group played 14 hours of the MMO over a period of two weeks.

Users who had cognitive issues prior were shown to have a “significant improvement in both spatial ability and focus”.

World of Warcraft was said to be chosen for its “cognitively challenging” gameplay and “socially interactive environment that presents users with novel situations”.

Check out our recent interview with World of Warcraft lead quest designer Dave Kosak about how the studio plans to continue tackling 2012.

With WoW’s subscription numbers dropping, maybe now they can start tackling the niche grave-dodger market.
