Blizzard Entertainment has announced record sales for their recently released MMORPG World of Warcraft. Having launched on Tuesday 23rd November, the game sold an estimated 250,000 copies in less than 24 hours, with many stores across North America completely selling out. Many fans queued for many hours in order to guarantee a copy of the game.

By 5:00 p.m. PST on Tuesday, more than 200,000 people had created WoW accounts, with more than 100,000 playing the game. This makes WoW the fastest growing online game in history. Sales are expected to remain strong, with a record first week online population record on the cards. The demand to play the game is so great that servers are full to the brim, forcing Blizzard to deploy more servers to cater for the rapidly growing user base.

“We had a lot of confidence in World of Warcraft, but the success on day one far exceeded our expectations,” said Mike Morhaime, president of Blizzard Entertainment. “We are extremely happy that players are enjoying our game, and we are doing everything we can to meet the demand and maintain a fun and smooth game experience for everyone playing.”

At the moment a European release date is TBA in 2005, but players who pre-order the game (exclusively at GAME stores) will be able to take part in a beta test, scheduled for sometime in December 2004.
