40 million Windows 8 licenses have been sold in the month following the new operating system’s launch, Microsoft has revealed.
This figure represents a faster pace than Windows 7 managed three years ago, which sold over 60 million licenses in its first 10 weeks.
“Windows 8 upgrade momentum is outpacing that of Windows 7,” said Tami Reller, finance and marketing head of the Windows business, speaking at an investor conference held by Credit Suisse.
It’s also worth noting that this doesn’t mean that 40 million PC users have adopted the new OS, with a large chunk of these sales going to PC manufacturers waiting to sell machines to companies.
Tech research firm StatCounter says that around 1 per cent of the world’s 1.5 billion PCs are running Windows 8 – that’s approximately 15 million.
Reller did not offer any indication of sales for Microsoft’s Windows 8 tablet, Surface.
