Windows 7 has finally overtaken Windows XP to become the world’s most popular operating system.

According to the latest report from Net Marketshare, 42.76 per cent of desktop computer users now use Windows 7, as opposed to the 42.52 per cent of users still using XP.

In contrast, only 6.15 per cent use Windows Vista, and even less – a lowly 2.45 per cent – use Mac OS X 10.7.

Game developers have started to drop support for Windows XP in recent years, largely due to the operating system’s incompatibility with DirectX 11.

It was revealed over the weekend that the PC version of Call of Duty: Black Ops II would not be compatible with Windows XP.

Windows XP first went on sale almost 11 years ago, with Windows 7 launching in July 2009.

Windows 8, the ‘catastrophic’ next version of Microsoft’s operating system, is due for release in October.
