During Nintendo’s pre-E3 Media Briefing, Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, revelead a new and unpredicted feature of the Wii – the console will function even when it appears to be turned off.
The Wii will be able to enter stand-by mode and remain connected to the internet at all times. One of the benefits will be that content will be able to be delivered when the system is not in use. The console will run silently in this mode since the fan will be powered down, also limiting power usage to levels similar to that of a miniature light bulb.
“Wii can communicate with the Internet even when the power is turned off. This “WiiConnect24” service delivers a new surprise or game update, even if users do not play with Wii,” states Nintendo in a fact sheet about the Wii.
The fact sheet continues, saying that the “Design was optimized with state-of-the-art processing technologies that minimize power consumption, keep the console compact and enable the “sleepless” WiiConnect24 mode.”
