Wii U gamers upgrading existing Wii Virtual Console titles to fully compatible Wii U versions will not be able to pick up their game saves, Nintendo has confirmed to Kotaku.

Last week Nintendo announced that people who have already purchased the Wii version of a certain NES or Super NES Virtual Console game and transferred it to their Wii U console can buy the enhanced Wii U version of the same game for the reduced price of £0.99 for NES games and £1.49 for Super NES games. Enhancements include the ability to play the games off-TV on the Wii U GamePad.

However, any game saves for these Virtual Console titles won’t carry across.

Virtual Console for Wii U is scheduled to launch this spring.

It’s disappointing that Nintendo didn’t figure out a way to carry over save files as it seems like something that shouldn’t be hard to do. The extra functionality offered in the Wii U versions of these games is nice, but for many it won’t be enough to have to pay again and start from scratch.
