Wii U will play Wii games, and the Wii itself could play Gamecube titles. That must mean that Gamecube games will work on Nintendo’s new machine, right? Unfortunately not, it would seem.
According to Giant Bomb, backwards compatibility with the Gamecube was ruled out by Mark Franklin, head of PR for Nintendo in the US. He also stated that the new machine won’t upscale the graphics of old Wii games.
As Giant Bomb points out, this means we won’t get a nice-and-easy HD version of Mario Galaxy.
“Both of those things are a great shame,” says VideoGamer.com video editor Tom Pearson, and I’m inclined to agree with him. The Wii offered a decent spread of vintage titles via the Virtual Console, and there’s no reason why the Wii U couldn’t offer a similar service, though I’d imagine most people will think twice about paying for titles they’ve already recently re-bought.
